Networking

PC Designs has begun providing home and small business network design and installation. This is a "turnkey" approach in which requirements are transformed into an efficient trouble-free network.

Home Netoworks:

These networks are generally based on Ethernet with speeds ranging from 10base-T to Gigabit Ethernet (1000base-Tx). Installation can be surface mounted cables or "in the wall" installations, depending on the construction of the house and where users and components are to be located.

Home networks usually consist of a DSL or cable modem, a section of 10base-T Ethernet, a hub/router which also provides a measure of firewall protection, and sections of 100base-T or Gigabit Ethernet. It is possible to use one of the personal computers (PCs) to connect to the Internet via modem and then share the connection over the network, if DSL is mot available. Connection between devices is by way of Peer-to-Peer networking.

Office Networks:

These networks are generally the same as home netoworks. They may incorporate a server-client topology running Windows NT, or more likely, Windows 2000 Server. A router would definitely be used and the connection to the Internet would be via a higher speed broadband connection.

The router and Server combination provides a measure of control, packet filtering, local e-mail service, and administrative upgrades. Centralized backups of each workstation are a necessity, even if the network includes only a few workstations.
