| Concrete Problem |
| Once the concrete was broken up, I was able to get a chunk of it and bring it home. This piece is from the garage. Yes, the concrete really was green. The colors are accurate. Notice that the surface (flat area toward you) and down for about 3/4 inch is very white. The surface is rough and the stone is showing through. That part set too fast when it was in the sun. It also dried out before it could set. The surface is very soft and crumbly. You can dig it away with a screwdriver. The green part is more solid, but not necessarily strong. Since it was poured in July, it should be at full strenght by now.
Here's what the concrete contractor said happened: The problem was the "mix". They said that the mix may have been wrong. It was supposed to be a #3500 material and may have had a sand problem. However, they were looking at only the surface. I'm sure they changed their mind once they saw the interior of the slab. It is interesting to note that the basement set differently. Its surface problem penetrated almost all the way through the slab. Apparently they poured two different batches in the basement and they set at different rates. The basement was sawed back to the good portion and the bad part was re-poured. We'll see how it goes. The bottom line is that the concrete was re-poured as I hoped. The cement contractor said the surface couldn't be re-poured. |
