Experience Heading

Power Supplies

Designs have included boost, buck, flyback and SEPIC. Power range, depending on type and design objective can be in the single watt to tens or hundreds of watts range. Past designs included a 500W ballast with power factor correction for use in a patented distributed lighting system. A SEPIC converter was used for a battery charger in which the input voltage varied above and below the changing voltage. Another important area of design experience is the use of switching supplies with low noise analog circuitry. This has always been a problem with radiated and conducted EMI (electromagnetic interference), but PC Designs has had good success dealing with this issue. A design was done using the DAA described below and a power supply on a PC-104 based DSP card.*

Analog Telephony

Designs include Subscriber Line interfaces (SLIC), Central Office Interfaces (COIC), Direct (or Data) Access Arrangements (DAA) for both domestic and international approval. Designs have also included 4-Wire E&M interfaces, Types 1 through 5. PC Designs is one of the first consultants to design using the C.P Clare CPC5601 in a delivered DAA system.

Motorola Embedded Microprocessors

PC Designs is concentrating on 8-bit microprocessors such as the MC68HC11 series and the MC6805 series. These microprocessors have very different topologies, but use similar mnemonics and syntax. The MC68HC11 series is the more powerful and versatile of the two, but is also more expensive, more power hungry, and is larger in size. PC Designs is capable of designing or assisting in the design of circuits and systems that incorporate these devices. Very tight assembly code has been used to program these devices.

Printed Circuit Design and Layout

PC Designs got its start laying out printed circuits using "tape and mylar", with plane layers being cut from "Rubylith". Since the individual that is PC Designs has been an engineer for over 25 years and has continually been involved in a wide range of circuit design techniques, PC Designs is qualified to assist in the design and layout of many types of circuits. Layout has typically been done using the Macintosh and Douglas CAD/CAM Professional Layout. Douglas CAD/CAM Professional Layout is an excellent program for rapid hand layout and crutucal low noise, and high power designs.  Once the layout is completed, Gerber files are extracted for use by any fabrication facility.

Prototype and Chassis layout and Fabrication

PC Designs has had experience in in-house prototyping of single and small quantity runs. PC Designs has assisted companies in securing small to medium quantities of manufactured units, and has resources to assist in large quantity procurement. In-house development of prototypes can include the layout of circuit boards, hand wiring of chassis, wiring of cabinets, etc.

Field Service and Installation

PC Designs has been involved in the installation and field service of major centralized data collection and T1 point to point telephony systems. Test plans were written and followed to the successful completion of the project. Much of the equipment is currently in use.

Technical Writing

Mr. Cleveland has structured, and written a number of service manuals. In addition, he has been involved in the writing of Acceptance Test Plans (ATP) and Test Procedures. He has also written both complete proposals and sections of proposals that were produced by a team. Some of this work has been in cooperation with other companies and organizations.
