This is a closeup view of the board edge showing the detail of the silkscreen and the density of the components.  Note that there are several components between the ICs, but that they remain clear of interference with those ICs.  The component outline was chosen to allow enough room to locate the particular component, without taking up undue board space.  By doing this, additional room could be used for reference designators, thereby allowing a larger font size.  Notice that there are relatively large holes at the end of several orange colored components (diodes).  These were requested by the customer to provide for the use of leaded components, if desired.  The holes are .035 in dia. to allow easy insertion and removal.  The VIAs in the area are .020 in. diameter.  This board was laid out by hand to minimize the number of layers and VIAs.
